There are three types of student engagement: behavioral, cognitive, and emotional. In layman's terms: students behave, they are happy, and they are eager to learn. The Big picture engagement goal for our students is a long-term yearning for learning. Having the attitude that learning is fun and seeing the value is an important lifelong skill.
Student engagement is linked to achievement. Which means that it is not just an addition to the instruction, but instead an integral part in the classroom and should be a focus of your instruction. Ok, students aside, us teachers need our classrooms to be engaging for our own health! Who wants to go into their classroom everyday and see students not having fun, engaged, happy, etc? So how should we ensure that we have engagement? Here's some ideas:
